What Makes A Book Rare?
Neil Weijer, former curator of The Harold and Mary Jean Hanson Rare Book Collection, is not just a guardian of ancient books, but an advocate for them. Weijer shares his knowledge alongside a vast collection of rare books to enrich the lives and learning journeys of students. “When I was an undergraduate, I had no idea that libraries had spaces and collections like this. It wasn’t until I was a junior that I was told to look at old materials in the special collections’ library in my college and my first thought was, 'I can do that? There’s no way,'” Weijer said. What makes a book rare? Usually, books that cannot be accessed right from the shelf, but need to be handled with the care of a curator qualifies them for this distinction. Even though these books can’t be plucked off the shelf, Weijer doesn’t want that to deter students from exploring what rare collections have to offer. If you’re interested in seeing something from our collections all you have to do is, ask. Emphasizing the accessibility of the collection is something that Neil is passionate about when it comes to his work. Everyone deserves to feel welcome in these stacks. Watching what others do and discover with the collection is a highlight of Neil’s job.
